IRS Quarterly Update: Enhancements in Taxpayer Services and Technology

The IRS continues to make strides in transforming taxpayer services through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding, unveiling several exciting developments. With the latest updates, the IRS is poised to provide more efficient and accessible services to taxpayers, aiming for a digital-first approach that mirrors the convenience of modern banking.

Key Highlights:

  1. Expanded Online Accounts: The IRS now offers six new features in the Individual Online Account, allowing taxpayers to easily access all tax-related information, manage Identity Protection (IP) PINs, and view audit statuses. Business owners can also benefit from the new Spanish version of the Business Tax Account, simplifying transactions for Spanish-speaking taxpayers.

  2. Electronic Filing for Amended Returns: Businesses can now file additional forms, such as Forms 940, 941, 943, and 945, electronically. This update streamlines the filing process and minimizes errors, offering a more seamless experience for business taxpayers.

  3. Document Upload Tool Milestone: The IRS's Document Upload Tool has reached over 1 million submissions, enabling taxpayers to respond to IRS notices digitally. This tool is part of the agency's effort to reduce paper-based processes and enhance digital communication.

  4. Mobile-Adaptive Forms: With 30 forms now available for mobile use, taxpayers can fill out and submit forms digitally from any device, reducing mail and paper usage. This includes important forms like the VITA/TCE Partner Sponsor Agreement and the Business Identity Theft Affidavit.

  5. Community Assistance Visits: To support taxpayers in underserved areas, the IRS has expanded its in-person service offerings, hosting Community Assistance Visits in remote locations to provide face-to-face support.
